Hair Loss- A Signal You Can't Always Afford to Ignore

Hair Loss- A Signal You Can't Always Afford to Ignore

As usual, this was prompted by a meeting that I had this weekend.

I met a man who mentioned that he had lost hair over his entire body.  Immediately, alarm bells went off in my head, and he has been on my prayer list since.  This was one of the most concerning conversations that I have had yet.

I have heard a doctor say they can immediately tell the circulatory health of a patient by the presence or lack of hair on the lower leg or feet.  Your body hair matters, and it often reflects what is going on internally.

Some symptoms just should not be ignored...

  • Like needing to have a bowel movement while experiencing low blood pressure
  • Like radiating pain on the left side of your body
  • Like sitting up and talking in a bright room, and then suddenly it seems like the curtains are being drawn on the room and everything is going dark

Things happen in our bodies for a reason, and we should pay attention to what those signals could mean.  Total body hair loss is a signal that needs to be evaluated sooner rather than later.

Hair loss can be the result of:

  • Genetics
  • Medication
  • Stress
  • Hormones
  • Infections

All of these reasons can make the hair on our head thin, fall out, or just to not grow.   These are not reasons to worry.

When there is hair loss affecting the entire body, this could be an indication that there is a serious underlying condition.  If you are not taking a medication that has complete hair loss as a known side effect, and if you are not sure of the reason for the hair loss, then I highly recommend that a doctor visit and full lab work be completed as soon as possible.

Hair loss throughout the body can be indicative of:

  • Cancer
  • Autoimmune Disorders
  • Serious Nutrient Deficiencies
  • Serious Endocrine Disorders
  • Underlying Infections that the body is not resolving

These conditions often require a significant medical response to shift the state of the body back into health.  Hair loss throughout the body is not a normal part of aging, and it could be a sign.  The body will pull nutrients from the hair and nails to protect and sustain the vital areas of the body like the heart and lungs.  This process helps protect vitality. The reason behind the hair loss needs to be known and addressed.  I think that it is imperative to pay attention to this signal and make the necessary adjustments.

There is a difference between hair loss on the head and hair loss on the body.  Hair loss on the body, particularly sudden hair loss, warrants a doctor's visit as soon as possible.  Even if it is not total hair loss across the body, body hair loss should be investigated.  For instance, hair loss on the legs can indicate Peripheral Artery Disease.

Be encouraged and know that many of the possible causes of the hair loss can be remedied with intervention.

So, please take body hair loss seriously and contact your doctor.

Stay safe and healthy!
