Volcanic Ash
Bentonite clay is volcanic ash that I find to be exceptionally helpful in my self-care routines.
I have used it to deeply cleanse my low porosity hair and as a mask on my face and hands. I had never researched it deeply and I was shocked at what I discovered.
Bentonite clay has been used for detoxifying and deeply cleansing but it has also been used for so much more.
According to researchers, people have found bentonite clay to have a soothing effect to the skin. They have used it to calm poison ivy, diaper rash, and acne. It can help regulate the levels of oil production in the skin. Researchers have found it to have antibacterial properties as well. It has been reported to help heal lesions and ulcers and to be more effective than sunscreen at protecting from the sun's rays.
What blew my mind was the effects that people have seen by taking bentonite clay orally. I had never thought of ingesting it, but it is very close to the diatomaceous earth that I have consumed for years...acting in similar ways.
There was a 2017 review that showed that ingesting bentonite clay may help reduce levels of lead, and another study in 2021 that showed promising data in reducing cholesterol. What amazed me was a 2022 study that showed that bentonite clay may have helped to clear C Diff from a patient's system. Anyone who has worked in a nursing home is familiar with C Diff and how complicated that can be.
Others have found it to he helpful in stopping diarrhea, in weight loss, in helping with various types of cancers, helping to flush the kidneys, and even helping as a sleep aid.
A couple of things to be aware of is that some people have experienced anemia after ingesting bentonite clay and some brands have tested high in levels of lead. You should always follow up bentonite clay with plenty of water whether you are rinsing your hair or ingesting it. Water helps to keep it moving and from getting stuck in your pipes or along your digestive tract.
I have included bentonite clay in my deep cleaning/charcoal soap for its many skin benefits. If you have considered including it in your routine, I hope that this has helped to give you more information about the possible benefits and cautions concerning this marvelous little volcanic ash.
