Lemon Balm... No Really It's an Herb

Lemon Balm... No Really It's an Herb

I often see posts of people talking about the great effects of Lemon Balm.  I get so excited because I feel that this herb is mostly unknown.  I hurry to see which benefits they are touting and then to my dismay; I see a recipe that includes lemons and herbs.

Make no mistake, there are many tinctures and concoctions featuring lemons that are incredibly beneficial.  But there is actually an herb called Lemon Balm.

It is in the mint family and like most of the mint family, it has shown a multitude of benefits.

For the skin, research has shown that it has antiviral, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and cleansing properties.  This can help clear up and soothe problem areas particularly on oily skin.  A lot of people have used it as a topical application to help reduce the active period of cold sores.

I have dry skin so I haven't use lemon balm for my skin. Although it is said to be good for eczema and psoriasis as it helps to calm the skin.

Lemon Balm has also been known to help with bloating, digestion and cramping.

I am allergic to so many things that my sinuses are almost constantly active.  I am almost always fighting a sinus infection and excess mucus.  I have found Lemon Balm to be even better for me than Goldenseal at managing this.  Goldenseal is so strong that I tend to wait until things are pretty bad before I take it.  Lemon Balm is much gentler and it has the added benefit of relaxing you and aiding in a good night's sleep.

I know that if I drink Lemon Balm tea an 1/2 hour before bedtime then:

I will fall asleep right away

Stay asleep for the night

Have a flatter belly

AND

Awaken with clear sinuses and less mucus in the morning.

It's amazing for me.  I have used this for years and it works every time.

There are some studies that show that Lemon Balm helps to improve mental function with greater clarity and focus.  It makes me sleepy.  That is the only reason that I don't take it more often.  I wait until just before bed to make the tea which is delicious,

I have just planted some Lemon Balm in my garden this week.  I am super excited to have such a versatile and safe plant on hand whenever I need it.  I am actually going to try to make a toner from it and see what happens.  I think I will infuse some glycerin or witch hazel with the leaves and see how it works.

I'll keep you updated on how it grows and if there are any special needs that I find.

In the meantime, don't shy away from the herb, Lemon Balm.  You might find that you like it.
