Tonics- A health and skin game changer

Tonics- A health and skin game changer

Tonics are a game changer.

NO, I’m not talking about gin and tonic!

I’m talking about the classification of herbs called tonics.

Tonics are a pretty broad classification with adaptogens and nutritives falling into this category.  Certain foods and mushrooms are tonics.

Regardless of what they are, to be classified as a tonic, they must have certain things in common.  They must strengthen some system in the body and help restore it to the right working order.  They tone, strengthen and support the body to be in a state of wellness.

Adaptogens are tonics that work primarily on the nervous system.  They help with stress response and support.  Ashwagandha is one that has blown up in the last few years.  Others would include the Reishi and Cordyceps mushrooms, Ginseng and Rhodiola.

Digestive tonics help to strengthen the digestive system.  The gingerol in Ginger is a compound that has helped with nausea and digestion.

With all the supplements and medicines that we take today, and with all the toxins in our foods (check out my video on the current Dirty Dozen) our livers are under constant pressure and tonics like dandelion and milk thistle help to strengthen the liver.

Tonics are generally considered safe and most will take them on a daily basis.  Some can take up to 6 weeks for the effects to be seen.  But don’t give up!  Most tonics have a cumulative effect on the system.  Once established, by daily usage, their effect becomes greater each day that you take them.  This can be nutritional gold! Because your body systems are strong, the likelihood of you becoming sick can decrease.

As always, I advise consulting with your chosen health care professional before making any changes or taking any herb.  While they are generally considered safe, some may have an unwanted effect on your health and you want to tailor the dosage to your body’s needs.  Garlic can significantly lower your blood pressure, and it can significantly thin your blood. People have reported going emotionally numb from taking too much Ashwagandha.   A lot of the tonics will strengthen and invigorate your immune system.  If you have an auto-immune disorder that may work against you.

The keys are to:

  1. Know your body- Get your blood work done and work with your healthcare professional

  2. Feed your body for health- Figure out the right amount of the right tonic for you

  3. Consistency- Use your chosen herb daily.  This is a life health plan not a quick fix.

  4. Choose Wisely- Whenever possible, grow your own herb or purchase organic.
